Synopsis: A documentary by Spanish filmmakers Esther Lozano and Monica Garriga, Between the Lines. The Initiation of Adam Hill, provides a unique and intimate glimpse into Australia’s identity through the critical eyes of an aboriginal urban artist. Adam Hill, an activist painter and musician, is defined by a mixed indigenous and white origin and Between the Lines follows him as he goes on an artistic and personal journey of identity through his artwork. Confronting his frustrations and his commitment towards his own Aboriginality, Hill struggles with the views held not only by the society around him but the people who are closest to him.
Confronting his frustrations and his commitment towards his own Aboriginality, Hill struggles with the views held not only by the society around him but the people who are closest to him.
Even his own Aboriginal father, Bob, has taken a very different view on identity, which sees him integrate alongside white Australian society, rather than questioning it.
Regardless of their opposite opinions they are both drown together by the memory of Colrine Mrdem, Adam’s paternal grandmother. It is through this union that we watch as Adam tries to seduce his father to go on a trip to the north of Sydney, to not only reconnect with their aboriginal family, which neither has met, but to also visit the spiritual home of Bob’s mother, Clorine.
Between the Lines offers a unique and intimate glance to the Australian identity through the critic eyes of an aboriginal urban artist. Adam Hill carries out a trip in search of his identity through his art, in an intense personal and artistic trajectory. Adam faces his frustrations and his commitment with his own aboriginality and fights against the opinions, not only by the society that surrounds him, but also people near him. The contradictions and frustrations of Adam are not exclusive of him or the Aborigines or the Australians, but universal. The necessity and the right to belong to a place and to define the own identity are a fight that is now made stronger than ever with the challenges of globalisation. The structures of power impose or deny the identity, and this documentary emphasises this fight of the individual.
